SUPPLIERS OF FINE FOODS & WINES

Some of the artisan food producers who supply our Dublin Cookery Classes and our outside catering.

Thirty years ago Baggotonia was replete with food suppliers. There was Hanleys on Mespil Road who supplied Frit and Veg (though I always preferred Fitzers in Camden Street, who have now become Caterway and still supply my fruit and veg, though now from distant Blanchardstown). My butcher was Dowlings of Upper Baggot Street, in business since 1954. The building is now a coffee shop. Fox’s of Donnybrook is a huge loss – no more dried fruits, vinegars, oils, nuts, herbs & spices We had a fishmonger in Donnybrook as well.

Our meat now comes from Michael Madden’s really outstanding The Village Butcher at the Triangle in Ranelagh. Well worth hopping off the Luas on the way home. Very friendly and helpful on cuts. (01) 406 6966

The Aughrim Country Fair runs from 10:00 am to 14:00 every Saturday. There I found hand cut orange marmalade and wonderful eggs from the Cosbys of Ballycreen.

Malone’s Fruit Farm at Ballon, Co Carlow, on the N80 is a family run business growing a variety of berries on 12 acres. The business started growing strawberries and now also grows raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, loganberries, tayberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, whitecurrants and rhubarb. Fresh fruit is available in the farm shop from mid May to early October while frozen fruit and a full range of homemade products are available all year round. 059 9159477.

A trip down the M11 to Juction 22, just before Gorey, is well worth while to visit Green’s Berry Farm for Wexford strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, early potatoes and gooseberries.

Pots, pans, knives and aprons come from Sweeney O’Rourke of Pearse St (677 7212) www.sweeneyorourke.com. Thank heavens that I bought all my copper saucepans from Dehillerin.in Paris before Aer Lingus introduced too many weight restrictions! http://www.e-dehillerin.fr/
